The Myth of Iffigenalp, Iffigsee, and Wildhornhütte
The Bernese Oberland is home to many beautiful and remote spots, each with its own set of legends and myths. Among these are Iffigenalp, Iffigsee, and Wildhornhütte. Here, nestled in the breathtaking landscapes, are stories that have been passed down through generations, adding a mystical charm to these serene locations.
The Legend of Iffigsee
Iffigsee, a picturesque alpine lake, is the setting for one of the region’s most haunting legends. According to local folklore, the lake was once a thriving village. The villagers, though blessed with abundance, were known for their arrogance and lack of gratitude.
One day, an old wanderer arrived at the village seeking shelter. The villagers, true to their nature, turned him away with scorn. Only a poor widow and her children showed him kindness, offering him food and a place to stay. Before departing, the wanderer, who was actually a powerful spirit, warned the widow of an impending disaster, instructing her to leave the village immediately.
The widow heeded the warning and fled with her children to the mountains. That night, a tremendous storm engulfed the village, and by morning, it had vanished, replaced by the tranquil waters of Iffigensee. It is said that on quiet nights, one can still hear the echoes of the lost village beneath the lake’s surface.
The Tale of Iffigenalp
Iffigenalp, with its lush meadows and alpine pastures, is not just a haven for hikers but also a place steeped in legend. The most famous tale from this area involves a mysterious alpine spirit known as the “Alpenkönigin” or “Queen of the Alps.”
The legend tells of a beautiful maiden who lived in the alpine meadows. Her beauty was so captivating that it caught the eye of a young shepherd. They fell deeply in love, spending their days together in the meadows of Iffigenalp. However, their happiness was short-lived, as the maiden revealed herself to be an alpine spirit bound to the mountains.
Heartbroken, the shepherd pleaded with the spirit to stay with him. Touched by his sincerity, the Alpenkönigin granted him a wish: she would stay with him for one year, but at the end of that time, she must return to the mountains forever. The couple enjoyed a year of bliss, but as the day of her departure approached, the shepherd could not bear the thought of losing her.
In a desperate attempt to keep her, the shepherd tried to bind her with a magical rope. The spirit, realizing his betrayal, vanished, leaving behind only a trail of tears that flowed into the valley, forming the stream that runs through Iffigenalp. The shepherd, consumed by grief, wandered the meadows for the rest of his days, searching for his lost love.
The Myth of Wildhornhütte
Wildhornhütte, a popular alpine hut located at the base of the Wildhorn peak, is the backdrop for a tale of heroism and mystery. According to the legend, the area was once plagued by a fierce dragon that terrorized the local inhabitants.
A brave young mountaineer, known only as Hans, vowed to rid the region of the dragon. Armed with his wits and a sturdy ice axe, Hans ventured into the dragon’s lair high in the Wildhorn. After a fierce battle, Hans managed to defeat the dragon, driving his axe deep into the creature’s heart.
As the dragon took its final breath, its blood seeped into the ground, causing the earth to tremble. A massive rockslide ensued, sealing the dragon’s lair forever. In gratitude, the villagers built the Wildhornhütte near the site of Hans’ victory, and it is said that on stormy nights, the echoes of the battle can still be heard, a reminder of Hans’ bravery.

My point of view
I really enjoy this hike. The described route is the longer version. If time is limited, you can simply visit Iffigsee or ascend to Iffighore. Another option is to hike to the Hütte and return. Whichever path you choose, you will always pass by Iffigsee. To observe the stunning Edelweiss, take the trail from Wildhornhütte towards “Geltenhütte,” which is the higher path. Look carefully between the Hütte and the point where the lake comes into view again; that’s where you can spot Edelweiss if you pay close attention. The ideal time to view Edelweiss is from late June until early Autumn. Please respect nature and don’t picking these flowers!
An alternative return route is from Iffighore towards Lenk, descending to Pöschenried. This path is less steep and offers a gentler descent. If you arrived by bus at Iffigenalp, this route is an option. From Pöschenried, you can catch the bus or savor the beauty of Iffigenfall and the small river leading towards Lenk.
