As you leave the village, you’ll follow well-marked trails that gradually lead you into the heart of the Swiss Alps. For now, you can’t hike till Schynige Platte. The trail has been closed because of dangerous rockfalls.

The hike to Breitlauenen covers approximately 7 kilometers and involves a moderate ascent. As you climb, you’ll have stunning views of the surrounding peaks and valleys. The trail winds through dense forests, offering shade and a sense of tranquility. Keep an eye out for local wildlife, including deer and various bird species that inhabit the area.

After about two and a half hours of hiking, you’ll reach Breitlauenen, situated at an elevation of 1,540 meters. This scenic spot offers panoramic views of the Jungfrau region and the pristine alpine landscape. It’s an excellent place to take a break, enjoy a picnic, and soak in the natural beauty. Breitlauenen is also a stop on the historic Schynige Platte Railway, which means you can choose to continue your journey by train if you prefer a more leisurely return to Wilderswil.

After enjoying your time at Breitlauenen, you can either hike back down to Wilderswil or take the scenic Schynige Platte Railway. The train ride offers a relaxing and picturesque descent, allowing you to savor the beautiful alpine scenery from a different perspective.

Alternatively, heading down to Bönigen is an option. However, this trail is quite steep and not always clearly marked. Additionally, the presence of trees along the path adds an element of adventure to your hike. Descending this route takes longer than the hike up from Wilderswil to Breitlauenen.

For those seeking a more challenging hike, consider continuing from Breitlauenen to the Schynige Platte. But the views from the top are well worth the effort.

My point of view of the Breitlauenen Hike

I embarked on an early morning hike to Breitlauenen, taking advantage of the top conditions. The trails, still wet and slippery from the recent weeks of rain, added a layer of challenge to the journey. The trail is especially captivating in the early morning. Three-quarters of its route winds through dense forests, providing a peaceful and shaded passage.

Originally, I planned to hike all the way to Schynige Platte, but rockfalls forced a change in plans. Despite not reaching my intended destination, the hike to Breitlauenen was equally enjoyable. The fresh morning air and the quiet of the forest made for a peaceful and invigorating experience. The lush greenery, coupled with the misty atmosphere, created a mystical ambiance that made the hike memorable.

The conditions might have been tricky, but the natural beauty and tranquility of the trail made it worth every step. This hike reminded me of the unpredictable yet rewarding nature of exploring the great outdoors.
